Interpreters at the notary

Lex van Hees

Do you have any questions? Or do you need advice?

You might know someone who comes from abroad, grew up in a different culture, but lives and works in the Netherlands. We also call these people ‘expats’, which is short for the word ‘expatriate’. Brainport, ASML, and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU), among others, are responsible for a large number of expats in the Eindhoven region. When these expats are looking for a notary, they often encounter a language barrier/problem.

Clear language

You need clear language, especially when it comes to notarial matters. Do you know what to bring to an appointment with a notary? What are you signing for? And what are the consequences?

As an expat, you are often not proficient in the Dutch language, making it difficult to arrange notarial matters. In our opinion, it is of vital importance that clients who have insufficient or no command of the Dutch language are informed in a language they can understand. This ensures clarity for them regarding the content of the documents that need to be signed, and of course, the consequences this entails.

Network of interpreters and translators

Deeds must be executed in the Dutch language. Marks Wachters notaries specializes in providing services to expats and other non-Dutch speaking clients. Through our established network of interpreters and translators, we assist in drafting deeds and other documents in other languages. When deeds drafted in Dutch are executed, we ensure an interpreter is present to translate everything for you. Discussions can also take place in other languages.

Doing business in the Netherlands

For entrepreneurs who are not proficient in Dutch or English but wish to establish a company, translating the necessary documents is essential. We often see that these entrepreneurs require a deed in English, German, French, or Polish. This is so they can conduct business in their country of residence with their Dutch company. It is also possible to translate the deed into multiple languages. Please note, however, that the deed to be executed must also be drawn up in Dutch!

Living in the Netherlands

For expats, buying a house in the Netherlands is often a big step. There are maximum loan amounts, using a real estate agent is often advisable, and notarial deeds such as the transfer deed and mortgage deed are drawn up in Dutch. It is also important for these individuals to be informed about what they can expect.

In short, do you know someone who needs notary services or advice in a language other than Dutch? We are always ready for these people.
