3 Tips for Choosing a Notary
Lex van Hees
Are you looking for a notary? Choosing a notary can be a tricky task. Therefore, we've put together some tips for you on what to look for when choosing the best notary.
Tip 1: Seek advice tailored to your personal situation
When your situation is completely ‘standard’, you can look for the cheapest notary. You can then request a quote from different notaries. However, if you want to arrange something that deviates slightly from the ‘standard’, many notaries will charge extra costs, and let's be honest: when is something truly standard? Therefore, always ask carefully what services are included in the given rate to prevent unexpected additional costs.
When you already know that your situation is not ‘standard’ (for example, because you are an entrepreneur), then good advice from an involved notary can be desirable. With this advice, you can prevent unpleasant consequences (that you might not initially think of yourself) in the future. For instance, if you get divorced or start your own company. You will pay a bit more than the cheapest rate, but you will then have the right (notarial) advice that fits your personal situation.
Tip 2: Make sure you understand the notarial deeds
Many notaries use many difficult words and jargon. This can sometimes make it difficult to fully understand what is stated in the drafted notarial documents. However, nowadays there are also enough notaries who find it important to explain to their clients in understandable and clear language what is described in the notarial documents. Ensure that you fully understand what is in the deeds before you sign anything. If you still don't understand the deed completely, ask the notary for an explanation. A good notary will take the time to explain everything to you properly because they consider it important that you fully understand all the notarial documents.
Tip 3: Choose a local notary
Naturally, this will save you travel costs, but choosing a local notary also has other advantages. For example, it's easier to drop by for an (extra) visit if necessary, such as for clarifications that cannot be resolved by phone. Additionally, when you choose a local notary, it's easier to ask acquaintances about their experiences with that particular notary. Do they recommend the notary or not, and why? Lastly, the notary hopes to build a long-term relationship with you, which is why they want to provide you with good service. This is less meaningful if you live far away, as the chances of needing each other again in the future are smaller.
